10 basic Inline figure skating moves
Welcome back! In this blog post, we will introduce you to some basic moves in inline figure skating. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an ice skater looking to train off-ice, these moves will provide a solid foundation for your inline figure skating journey. So, lace up your skates and let’s get started!

- Fall and Stand Up: This is the first thing you need to learn when starting to skate. It involves learning how to fall safely to minimize injury and how to get back up efficiently.
- March Forwards: This is the initial stage of movement where you lift one foot and then the other, similar to marching1. It helps you get a feel for the skates’ roll.
- Forward Two-Foot Glide: This involves gliding on both skates with your feet about one foot apart. You start by bending your knees and ankles, pressing inward, and allowing your feet to move forward and separate. Then, you straighten your knees and bring your toes together to form an inverted ‘V’ position, making a circular motion with both feet
- V-Stop: To perform a V-stop, spread your legs out wider than shoulder-width apart as you skate and turn your toes in towards each other to stop. This technique helps you slow down gradually.
- Skate and Dip: The dip is a basic skating move where you lower your body into a squat position and then push off with your legs to generate speed
- Forward Inside Three-Turn: This is a more advanced move where you start on a forward inside edge and turn to skate on the backward outside edge of the same foot
- Backward Stroking: This involves skating backwards, which can be achieved by spreading your legs over a shoulder-width apart at first and then turning your toes inward
- Beginning One-Foot Spin: This is a basic spin performed on one foot. You start by getting some momentum and begin gliding on one foot. Then, you shift your weight and pivot on your left leg if you’re right-handed. Gradually lift your right leg as you pull into the turn
- T-Stops: This is a stopping technique where you turn your skates so that they’re perpendicular to your direction of travel. You then lean your weight to the inside of the turn and keep your skates close to the ground. As you turn, use your inside foot to push off the ground and slow yourself down
- Bunny Hop: This is a small jump where you swing the free leg backwards, then forwards. When it passes the skating leg, you spring a little bit off the skating foot and hop into the air, while continuing the forward swing of the free leg.
Remember, safety is crucial when practicing these moves. Always wear appropriate protective gear, including a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards. Happy skating! 😊
